What is a specific carbohydrate diet?

What is a specific carbohydrate diet?

At Verywell, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to a healthy lifestyle. Successful meal plans must be individualized and take into account the whole person. Before starting any new diet, check with your doctor or dietitian, especially if you have an underlying health condition.

What is a specific carbohydrate diet?

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet follows the theory that restricting certain carbohydrates can help people with digestive problems, such as irritable bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, celiac disease, and celiac disease. Dietary restrictions do not include grains, lactose or sucrose, as these are thought to be more difficult to digest than other types of carbohydrates.

This diet was developed by pediatrician Sydney Valentine Haas, and his research was published in the 1951 book "Management of Celiac Disease." According to the doctor. Hass, carbohydrates are forms of sugar that promote the growth of bacteria and yeast in the gut, causing an imbalance and overgrowth of bacteria.

He suggests that if you remove or restrict some of the carbohydrates available to your gut bacteria, you eliminate the chances of those bacteria growing and producing toxins. This in turn will help fix GI.1 issues.

Dr. Haas suggests that this type of diet can benefit anyone with Irritable Bowel Syndrome,

Ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, celiac disease, chronic diarrhea, spastic colon, and Crohn's disease. However, scientific support and peer-reviewed research for a specific carbohydrate diet is still limited.
