What is the new Mayo Clinic diet?
At Verywell, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to a healthy lifestyle. Successful diet plans must be individualized and take into account the whole person. Before starting a new diet, consult your doctor or dietitian, especially if you have an underlying health condition.
What is the new Mayo Clinic diet?
The new Mayo Clinic Diet (recently updated from the Mayo Clinic Diet) is a balanced diet called a Lifelong Weight Loss Program that takes a long-term approach to weight management. Designed by Mayo Clinic weight management experts and developed through extensive research and clinical experience, the program's goal is to help you create habits that are easy to maintain.
At the heart of the program is the Mayo Clinic's five-level Healthy Weight pyramid, where each level encourages the consumption of nutrient-dense food options designed to keep you full and satisfied. Key aspects of the diet include choosing nutritious foods. Activity combined with an adaptive lifestyle approach to reap the benefits.
Divided into two phases, Phase One includes a two-week "Lose It" plan to launch the program in a manageable manner, and foster positive habits. This phase is followed by the "Live It" phase, which encourages the implementation of these changes to redesign your lifestyle for the long term.
In addition to supporting weight management, the new Mayo Clinic diet has other health benefits. For example, research has shown that similar diets that focus on eating whole foods and limiting highly processed foods and added sugars can reduce the risk of many health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and digestive disorders. and even some types of cancer
The Mayo Clinic's New Diet ranks #1 in US News & World Report's Best Diet Programs for 2022, as well as being named one of the best diets overall. It is also listed among the best diabetes diets.3
But beware of bogus versions of the diet circulating under the Mayo Clinic name, none of which are approved by the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. For example, any Mayo Clinic diet that promotes increased intake of grapefruit and eggs, limits vegetable intake, and results in very significant weight loss in just a few months, does not follow the Mayo Clinic.
